“I read the news today, oh boy…” – Paul McCartney & John Lennon

I always thought I was pretty lazy guy and when I retired, I would have lots of time to sit and do nothing. But I have quickly discovered being retired is a busy time. There just don’t seem to be enough hours in a day.

Here’s a look at a very typical day from just a couple of days ago that will give you an idea of how I spend my days in Loring, Ontario.

7:03 am Woke up this morning, well rested and without the aid of an alarm clock.
7:08 am Started a fresh pot of old fashioned “percolated coffee”.
7:17 am Checked email and Facebook and then started writing.
9:36 am My Shirley woke up so I took a break for our first hot tub of the day.
10:23 am Decided to pass on breakfast and began to consolidate 2 x ½ piles of wood into 1 pile.
11:55 am Drove to Rupert’s Variety Store in Arnstein for luncheon meat for sandwiches to use up a head of lettuce before it goes bad.
12:36 pm Walked to the Nursing Station next door to pick up mail.
12:43 pm Stopped to pet 2 dogs that a neighbour had out for a walk.
1:11 pm Sitting in hot tub with a cold beer, letting the jets soothe my aching muscles from re-piling wood this morning.
1:16 pm Heard loud crash and looked to see consolidated wood pile had fallen over. Damn!
1:33 pm Sitting on the deck letting the sun dry me off, watching an occasional leaf from the cherry tree fall and thinking of my sister Gina who likes to run and catch them at this time of year. Considered trying to catch one, but one fell on the table right beside me so I just picked it up and set it free instead.
3:06 pm Sun is behind the trees and it’s cooling down now so I make a couple of mojitos and we warm up in the hot tub one more time.
4:38 pm Sit down to enjoy some chicken wings while watching the Blue Jays battle the Red Sox. Blue Jays win – yeah! Go Jays!
8:08 pm Watch the Rangers play the Indians trying to decide which team I should root for to make it to the World Series only to be defeated by the Blue Jays. Never had this much interest in baseball before but now I have more time.
9:53 pm Heading to bed where I PLAN to plan tomorrow’s schedule before falling asleep if I don’t fall asleep first.
Job 1 – re-pile woodpile.
Job 2 – Visit Buchanan’s Hardware Store to pick up snacks for a visit from My Shirley’s sister and her husband tomorrow.
That sounds like enough. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Zzzzzz.
