Death Becomes Us

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

– Dylan Thomas (1951)

Did you ever dread doing something so much that you kept putting it off for as long as you could get away with it? And then, when you couldn’t put it off any longer, you found out it wasn’t really so bad after all.

And have you ever refused to do something because you thought that you just wouldn’t like it; but when a friend finally talked you into it, you discovered it was so much fun that you regretted waiting so long to try it?

Maybe that’s what death is like. It’s one of those things that we’re all going to have to go through eventually but most of us at least, seem to want to put it off for as long as we can.

Maybe death won’t be so bad and if we’re really lucky, maybe it’ll even be one of those things that’s so great we’ll slap ourselves on the forehead and think “Oh man! Why didn’t I do this years ago?”

Dylan Thomas suggests wise men try to postpone death simply because they have not accomplished enough.

Perhaps the reason that we resist death so much is that so many of us have the mistaken notion that our temporary sojourn here on earth is supposed to have some kind of meaning or importance.

Could it be that man’s vanity and arrogance has led us to believe that the entire universe and all things great and small in it have been carefully mapped out and created for our own personal benefit?

While in reality – those things we do accomplish may be nothing more than futile attempts to leave our mark much like a dog does when he pees on a tree. After time, not even another dog will know he’s ever been there.

I like to think life is just foreplay for one giant final orgasm we call death.

And while a certain amount of foreplay can increase the intensity of the orgasm – too much foreplay is nothing more than postponing pleasure for the sake of pleasure. Kind of seems like a bit of a waste, don’t you think?

I like to think that my life will end in a real bang (not a whimper) – one final mind blowing orgasm.

I could be wrong of course, but it’s a nice way to think about death.
