Racism - Not Just A Black & White Issue

– by jim young

As a writer I am opposed to censorship.

But as the old saying goes, “Freedom of speech does not give you the right to yell ‘Fire!’ in a crowded movie theatre.”

So let me qualify my first statement by saying, “as a writer I am opposed to censorship except in extreme cases.”

The case of Ryerson student Justin Morris whose email entitled “KKK – White Power” led to public outcry of racism is a good example.

Hate literature is and should be a prime target for censorship.

But while Morris’s means to his end was, by his own admission, inappropriate, it does not necessarily invalidate what seems to have been his intent. The point that members of the New Black Panther Party are no more welcome than would be members of the Klu Klux Klan is a position that may well be hard to argue with.

While the New Black Panther Party may be searching for equality – a very honourable endeavour indeed, the 10 Point Platform on their web site clearly goes beyond equality demanding special rights and privileges for non-whites. Isn’t that racism by definition?

“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander” is not a philosophy that should be embraced in issues such as these. “Two wrongs don’t make a right” seems to be more appropriate.
